LIVERPOOL’S London Carriageworks may have just been named the best restaurant in the North but it seems, sadly, that some of the city’s other supposed fine eateries have some work to do.

Panoramic, located on the 34th floor of Beetham’s West Tower near the waterfront, opened in a blaze of publicity earlier this year.

Not only did it promise spectacular views across Merseyside and North Wales but, just prior to its launch in February, director Chris Marshall gushed: “We are hopefully going to produce the best food in the city.”

Unfortunately, one national newspaper reviewer told his readers at the weekend that he was less than enamoured with the grub and wondered whether it might be better if punters enjoyed the view from the bar “while ordering in a pizza or Indian takeaway”.

CHESTER Raceourse’s fancy new eaterie, 1539, held a “media tasting event” organised by Liverpool PR outfit Factory Communications (soon to be swallowed up by rival firm Paver Smith).

With great comic timing, Factory picked last Friday – the day after the local elections – to invite around 20 members of the North West press. Sadly, most of the name badges remained unused as only four showed up. Presumably, the rest were snoozing following the late- night vote counts.

THE Conservative Party will work closely with Rolls-Royce as part of efforts to create a “modern manufacturing revival”, party leader David Cameron, above, announced yesterday.

He might want to take a trip to Netherton, where Rolls is in the process of shutting down its gas turbine factory and cutting more than 200 jobs.
