SMALL firms pres-sure group the Forum of Private Business (FPB) says scrapping Empty Property Rate Re-lief will intensify the effects of the economic downturn.
In April, changes to Empty Property Rate Relief forced businesses to pay rates on empty buildings. More than 30 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion against the tax. The FPB is con-cerned the move has already left many small firms out of pocket. One member, Jonathan Williamson, who owns property firm Granville Estates, said: “Gordon Brown says this is to regenerate the market by stopping people sitting on empty properties as they appreciate in value, but I think these people are in the extreme minor-ity. I don’t want my properties to stay empty.
“I want money coming in. I think the Government has just got it wrong.
