Safety standards still not adequate 20 years after Piper Alpha, union claims

The offshore oil industry is still not paying enough attention to safety, two decades after the Piper Alpha disaster which killed 167 workers, a union claims.

Maritime union RMT says that enforcement on safety issues is lax, and that the number of inspectors has fallen by almost 40% since 1994.

It adds that workers risk being told they are “not required back” (NRB) if they raise safety issues.
