Retail chain John Lewis reports strong performance for clearing sales

Retail giant John Lewis says its first week of clearance sales generated revenues of £61.5m - a fall of 1.3% on a year earlier but up 9.7% on the same week two years ago.

The chain’s sales have been under pressure in recent months, with the group recently reporting a drop of 8.3% on a year ago for the week to June 28.

Selling operations director Dan Knowles says bargain hunters gave the chain a better result during the biggest week of the financial year to date.
