Unite support crisis-hit Cains

TRADE union Unite threw its support behind Liverpool brewer Cains last night as the company was kept waiting for another day for news from its bankers about its future.

Unite, which represents 35 workers at the brewery, is concerned the jobs of its members will be at risk if the bank doesn’t help.

Franny Joyce, Unite’s regional official, said: “We are concerned the banks may go running for cover.

“We have no doubt that when the economy picks up in the future, if allowed to do so, this robust business will continue to be successful.”

Cains is the subject of a winding-up order from HM Revenue & Customs about unpaid tax and needs the approval of its bankers, Bank of Scotland, to meet an agreed payment plan.

The brewer lost £4.6m in the six months to April.

Speaking yesterday, Cains chief executive Sudarghara Dusanj said: “It’s very much just wait and see.”
