Thousands apply for terminal jobs

MORE than 60 people have applied for every job at the £6m fresh produce terminal being built at the Port of Liverpool.

About 2,500 people have applied for the initial 40 jobs at the terminal, which is expected to begin operation in October. It will initially target the Spanish fruit season and the fresh produce trundled across Europe on 300 trucks arriving in Britain every day.

The 90,000 sq ft produce terminal at Royal Seaforth Dock is expected to eventually employ 100 permanent and temporary staff.

Go-Associates’ operations director Andy Rickard said: “Instead of a daily convoy of trucks each carrying just 26 pallets, a ship with up to 5,000 pallets can be discharged at the new terminal in 24 hours.”
