HOUSEHOLD goods firm McBride is opening a new factory in St Helens while scaling back its Warrington plant as it overhauls its UK manufacturing base to cope with soaring oil prices.
The company, which makes products such as laundry liquids, mouthwash and toothpaste for supermarkets’ own labels, said “unprecedented” cost inflation had sent annual profits down by more than a third.
Underlying pre-tax profits fell 38% to £19.7m in the year to June 30.
The company is now axing a tenth of its 2,500-strong UK workforce to cut costs.
It is closing a manufacturing plant in Coventry and moving the work to its St Helens factory. The company is also moving production from Warrington to St Helens.
