£1bn tidal power bid takes step forward

THE developer of a proposed £1bn scheme to generate tidal power on the Mersey says the project has passed another key milestone.

Peel Energy has launched a Europe-wide search for consultants to help it gain planning consent for the Mersey Tidal Power scheme, which it hopes will be working by 2020.

Peel, part of the Peel Holdings group which also owns John Lennon Airport, says Mersey tidal energy could provide power to supply up to 260,000 homes.

It aims to “deliver maximum affordable energy with acceptable impacts on environment, shipping, business and the community”.

A study in 2007 suggested a number of options for tidal power schemes and Mersey Tidal Power has now put out a tender to find a consortium to select a preferred option and win consent for it.

Anthony Hatton, Peel Energy's marine power development manager, said:Š”This is an exciting and important milestone on the path to identifying a scheme that we aim to take to planning in 2011.”
