City hotel bookings soar in face of downturn

VISITOR numbers at Liverpool's hotels are soaring while the rest of the country suffers from the economic slowdown....

THE Liverpool office of accountants Grant Thornton is hoping to reclaim some English cricketing pride next week when their colleagues from Down-under arrive for the firm’s first Alternative Ashes series. A team made up of Grant Thornton’s five Australian offices are touring England for a series of 40-over matches. The Liverpool team is said to be unfazed by last year’s Ashes trouncing, ahead of the match in Sefton Park on Monday. Don’t be too surprised to hear the odd cry of “Strewth” and “Crikey” when the Antipodean visitors get an eye-full of the assorted wildlife on display in the park on an average week night.

CONGRATULATIONS to Stephen Roberts, manager of Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza Hotel, who has been reappointed to the chair of the city’s hoteliers association. We know Stephen, below, takes a healthy body healthy mind approach to his job, and is regularly to be found working up a sweat at the hotel’s Harbour Club gym. Next time he’s there, he might want to take a closer look at the leaflets in reception. One is from an outfit called Acustaple UK which can offers treatment for stress, back pain, weight loss and stopping smoking which apparently involves having your ear stapled. Suppose it beats an hour on the treadmill....
